Parable 2
The Castles We Build
An Enduring Parable
One day, a man dreamt that he was walking along a road when he met Jesus.
Recognizing Him, the man immediately fell to his knees and began to worship.
“Oh Jesus, how I love You,” he cried. “I have worked hard to keep Your Word. I pray daily and treat my brothers and sisters fairly. I tithe a tenth of all I have. I feed the hungry, clothe the needy and serve the poor. I am also a faithful church worker, and I always try to help those in need.”
Jesus listened and said, “Well done, My servant.” He then continued walking in the direction He was going.
But the man wanted Jesus to remember him in His Kingdom. He wanted Jesus to know everything he had accomplished.
“Jesus, wait,” the man called. “I have built castles for many.”
Jesus turned and looked at him.
“Yes,” He said, “but you have lived in all of them.”
The man did not understand.
“How could I have lived in castles I built for other people?”
“You lived in their praise,” Jesus answered. “You lived in the gratitude you expected and in the recognition you received. You helped others, but you kept returning to admire what you had done.”
The man lowered his head.
“Then how should I serve?” he asked.
“Build what will bless others,” Jesus replied. “Then give Me the keys.”
The man awakened and understood that it was possible to do a good thing for another person while secretly building a monument to himself.
From that day forward, he continued to serve. But he no longer asked that his name be remembered. He prayed only that God’s love would be felt.
Nugget of Wisdom
Build what blesses others, but do not make your home in the praise it brings.

◆ When I help someone, what praise or recognition do I secretly hope to receive?
◆ Can I do the good work and give God the keys?
Prayer
Lord, examine my motives and teach me to serve with humility. Help me do good without needing praise, recognition or repayment. May my service point others toward You. Amen.
